Professor Margery C. Carlson of the Botany Department of Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, is shown with one of the flasks containing a solution of mineral salts, sugar, and agar, in which she had succeeded in germinating seeds of a species of orchid, the Grass Pink or Calopogon Pulchellus. After six months in the flask, the plants are transplanted into the greenhouse, and if the experiment is successful, she expected that the species of orchid would be as cheap as sweet peas for corsages. The Grass Pink is closely related to tropical orchids, the most expensive of all flowers, and resembles it except that it is slightly smaller. It reaches full bloom in three years, where tropical orchids take seven. Get premium, high resolution news photos at getty

February 2022, Saxony, Roßwein: In the camellia house, which is looked after by members of the Heimatverein Roßwein e.V., the camellia "Camellia japonica Chandlers Elegans" shows its double red-white flowers. Currently, the greenhouse also features the white blooms of the more than 200-year-old camellia "Alba plena". The 6.50-meter-high plant, also known as the Tea Rose of Winter with its double flowers up to 10 centimeters in size, is said to have been planted in the 18th century by Count von Einsiedel at Gersdorf near Roßwein. The botanical rarity is the second oldest north of the Alps in Europe after the famous Pillnitz camellia and can be seen with other different camellia varieties every weekend until the end of March. Located on the Gaujacq hills, the village of Chalosse opposite the Pyrenees, Gaujacq château is a stately home built in the 17th century by François de Sourdis, lieutenant-general of King Louis 14th’s armies. This château’s architecture is original and unusual. It has a single storey layout around a garden “of delights”, surrounded by an Italian style gallery. The owners, Philippe and Solange Casedevant, welcome you and invite you to discover the apartments from the 17th and 18th centuries, furnished and decorated with panelling and painted panels. It transports you to back in time. Each summer, candlelit night visits are organised, some with Baroque music concerts.
