To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Chanel No. 5, Chanel did something it had never done -- change the package. Laurie Palma, Chanel's VP-fragrance marketing, knew it would take a stunning idea to convince executives to tamper with the sophisticated black-and-white Chanel box, which has become a fragrance icon. At first it was a little hard to swallow, admits Ms. Palma, 46. We've never tampered with the package or the scent. But when corporate executives saw the plans for a tie-in with artwork created by Andy Warhol, Ms. Palma says they knew it was a perfect fit. An opportunity like this doesn't come very often, she says. Andy Warhol had used the No. 5 bottle as an inspiration for a series of nine works. The respect is mutual -- several of Mr. Warhol's paintings hang in Chanel's offices. Using three of Warhol's images, the concept first emerged as an advertising campaign and then was quickly expanded to new packaging and in-store displays. From the advertising campaign idea, Ms. Palma expanded into using the artwork as large posters and mobiles in stores and on limited-edition packages. What struck me was the power of using these two great creative geniuses [Mr. Warhol and Coco Chanel] of our time who helped shape our culture, recalls Ms. Palma of the program that ran March through June 1997.

The offset lithograph is published by Te Neues Publishing Company, printed in Germany in 1989 in cooperation with The Estate and The Andy Warhol foundation for Visual Arts. The litograph has been sealed with the orignial stamp of the AW foundation. The lithograph features an artwork image originally created by Warhol in 1984 titled Grace Kelly (registered in the Catalogue Raisonné 1962-1987 Feldman/Schellmann II. 305). Andy Warhol (1928-1987), son of Czech immigrants, began his career in advertising. He was mainly involved in designing record covers, weather maps for television and Christmas cards. In 1959 he exhibited his artwork for the first time at the Bodley Gallery in New York. He invented the simple but time-consuming technique of the 'blotted line' himself, with which he created his characteristic illustrations. In addition to the record cover of The Velvet Underground & Nico, the screen prints of Campbell's Soup and the portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jackie Kennedy and Elisabeth Taylor are now world famous. Warhol started making screen prints in 1962. This printing technique soon became his main method. In the same year, his studio 'The Factory' was set up in New York. With the help of employees, Warhol realized a high art production there, which indeed resembled a factory. With his method of mass production, Warhol approached art in a revolutionary way for the time. The idea of an original work of art was no longer applicable in his view. The size of this hard to find and out of print collector's Pop Art print is 12 W X 16 H (31 cm by 40 cm). The lithograph is printed on high-quality smooth finish paper stock with colourful ink. It is in mint condition, with a little wear on the edges (considered in the price). It has never been framed. Please see photos for condition reference.
