Top three issues in working from home

When the concept of working from home was first introduced to businesses, skepticism was the first and obvious reaction. The thought of giving employees the power to decide when and where to work seems like a managerial disaster just waiting to happen. There have been instances of employees abusing this privilege and working at lesser capacity than when they were reporting to the office.

Working from home does not necessarily pose risks to the productivity of a company for as long as appropriate measures are taken to ensure that employees still remain professional and responsible to their actions within the company. Noted below are some popular issues experienced by businesses with work-from-home policies:

Communicate!

It is a logistical nightmare for a company to require the presence or feedback from a specific employee and find that he cannot be reached through his phone or e-mail and is not present online. One of the major issues experienced by work-from-home companies is communication between employees.

Since the business will theoretically cut down on physical interactions with the employee itself, it is expected that employees maintain a constant line of communication with their teammates or managers. These can usually be addressed by Internet-aided communications such as use of a virtual office for team communications or even an e-mail report of your progress. It is important that employees working from home ensure that they can still be reached by their companies.

Be accountable for your time

With working from home comes the freedom to control when you work. This leads to employees either working under the required number of hours or getting too into the work hype and ending up going over the work hours. Either instance cannot be tolerated as they both lead down the path to more issues.

Eliminating the need to report to an office workplace holds an employee answerable to everything that he does during his official work hours; no matter what time of day he decides to perform that. Responsibility needs to be practiced for employees working from home to ensure that they are not just spending their work hours goofing off at home or spending time out with friends. In response, several businesses have put up means to ensure that despite working remotely, employees remain productive and doing their tasks at peak efficiency.

Separate work from life

The office was built for several good reasons, one of them ensuring that an employee is free of all distractions from the outside world by keeping him focused on his work and maintaining the bar of productivity. However, working from home tends to blur the line between work and life itself as the employee gets exposed to both instances at the same time. While this is a natural thing to happen associated with working from home, employees need to learn to establish boundaries between work and home and learn when to step between the two worlds.

Working from home is a great prospect to explore for a business looking to modernize its operations. With these issues in mind, preparation is necessary to have them addressed properly to ensure that your employees remain just as productive as if they would be in an actual office environment.
